Synthetic 2012 : Foam est une rencontre entre l’ESBA TALM (Le Mans, Angers), TU Delft (Delft University of Technology, Rotterdam), et l’ESAD Valenciennes, autour d’une expérimentation sur la construction robotisée à grande échelle. Le programme comprend un workshop en deux phases (phase 1 –  Le Mans / phase 2 – Rotterdam) ; un colloque à Paris (ENSPM, Paris) ; la réalisation d’un film ; des expositions.

Déroulement et programme

Il s’agit de confronter les étudiants avec l’impact potentiel de la robotique sur les modes de fabrication du design et de l’architecture, et ainsi leurs offrir la possibilité de mettre en pratique les connaissances acquises par la fabrication d’un élément de grande échelle. L’objectif est dans un premier temps théorique. Par le biais d’une conception libre, il vise l’acquisition des connaissances nécessaires au passage de la forme conçue à la programmation des mouvements d’un bras 6 axes capable de la construire (robots ABB IRB 6400) ; Ce passage est notamment rendu possible par le biais du programme HAL développé par Thibault Schwartz. Les étudiants passent ainsi d’un design empirique à l’écriture logique des mouvements du robot doté du type d’outillage souhaité (préhension, usinage, découpe, etc.) ; et plus généralement ils passent des intentions formelles et constructives à la simulation précise de la fabrication et de son environnement.
La première phase est donc centrée sur les dispositifs de conception. Elle s’articule autour d’un colloque centré sur le « tournant computationnel » (Computational Politics and Architecture : From Digital Philosophy to the End of Work, ENSAPM, colloque organisé par P. Morel, C. Girard et L. Dimitriadi, dans le cadre du programme Digital Knowledge) ; sur un vernissage au Frac Centre d’Orléans, Flight Assembled Architecture, soit la première installation construite par drones volants (Gramazio & Kohler et Raffaello D’Andrea). La seconde phase a lieue à Rotterdam et vise la fabrication de l’élément grande échelle. Sur un site de production prêté par la Delft University (Hyperbody Resaerch Group) et Jelle Feringa doté de deux Robots 6 axes ABB 6400 (RDM Campus), les étudiants disposent de 4 jours pour fabriquer et assembler ce qui a été conçu lors de la première phase. Si la méthode est la fabrication robotisée par découpe à fil chaud de blocs de polystyrène, l’objectif est surtout de permettre une organisation collaborative pour la construction d’un grand élément, comme un pavillon ou une sculpture, et cela en un temps très court. Phase 1 : Semaine 48 – 2011(du 28 Novembre au 2 Décembre) ESBA TALM – Site du Mans Phase 2 : Semaine 2 – 2012 (du 9 au 13 Janvier) Rotterdam – TU DELFT / RDM CAMPUS
